As a utility Ameren owns the energy grid, lines and meters to your location. However, customers of Ameren Illinois have the choice of purchasing the natural gas and electricity supply from a third party supplier, as known an ESCO (Energy Services Company).

  • What is the difference between a utility and a supplier?
    • A Third Party Supplier supplies the energy your business consumes and the utility delivers it through wires and poles to your facility.
  • Does it cost money to switch your business to another supplier?
    • There is no cost to enroll. To get find out how much you can save, simply enter basic information on your energy spend and shop rates from top supplier.
  • How many energy suppliers are in the market?
    • There are A LOT of natural gas suppliers in the Illinois energy market. Some serve all rate classes of customers, some specialize in small/medium and others only large customer classes. Diversegy only works with reputable commercial energy supply companies and will match you with energy suppliers that serve Ameren and your commercial rate class.
  • How do I find the best rate for me?
    • Step 1: Find a list of all licensed third party suppliers in your area of Illinois that serve your rate class. Step 2: reach out to every one of them. Step 3: request pricing. And finally, step 4: do a full rate comparison and choose which one that works best. But you would be missing a few key pieces. Did they price the same day? Did you know that energy prices could change daily? What does their contract say? Are they reputable? Is the price for consolidated billing or dual billing? Is the price fixed or index? Will it go up after 3 months or stay the same for the length of the contract. • When does Ameren change their rates?
    • Ameren changes their electric rates for residential customers by season. It is broken into two periods: for winter months, October through May and for summer months June through September. They do not publish their commercial rate price to compare. This can also change monthly through the ‘purchased electricity adjustment’ and ‘supply cost adjustment’.
  • What is a supply cost adjustment?
    • The Supply Cost Adjustment is designed to allow the utility to recover costs associated with procurement, working capital and uncollectible charges. The Supply Cost Adjustment is largely a fixed charge that changes only when the ICC makes changes to Ameren Illinois' delivery service rates, after an annual power supply procurement update, or pursuant to other Commission Orders.
  • What is ‘Purchased Electricity Adjustment’?
    • The "Purchased Electricity Adjustment" is a monthly charge that causes the electric supply charges to fluctuate above or below the established electric supply rate from one month to the next. The purpose of the Purchased Electric Adjustment is to "true-up" any difference (over or under) between what Ameren Illinois previously paid to acquire electric supply and what Ameren Illinois previously charged its customers for that electric supply.
  • Will suppliers charge anything similar to ‘Purchased Electricity Adjustment’ or ‘Supply Cost Adjustment’?
    • Some. However, the rates we display on our website include ‘all-in’ fixed rates that remain the same throughout the contract and will not have adjustments like the above. There are suppliers that will over an introductory rate, that is usually followed by a higher rate. There are other rate plans the only fix certain components of the rate. Diversegy reserves those types of plans for larger, more sophisticated customers where and when it makes sense. We do not display any of these types of rates on the website.
  • Do commercial energy taxes fluctuate?
    • Yes, federal, state and local government taxes contribute to the cost of energy for your business. Natural Gas prices have risen over the past few years due to the increase price in original materials cost. For more information: https://www.afdc.energy.gov/fuels/prices.html
